China Europe International Business School

Built on an agricultural, four-hectare site, in the Pudong New Area of Shanghai, for an institution in its infancy, this campus has been instrumental in establishing CEIBS’s reputation as a foremost Asian institution providing international-standard teaching, research and residential facilities for MBA, EMBA and Executive Development programs. Acknowledging both initial funding limits and the likelihood of future growth, the campus was planned and implemented in phased construction, without disruption to the ongoing life of the school

The buildings were arranged for functionally desirable adjacencies while at the same time fostering lively interaction between all sectors of the campus. The library/information center is a strong figural presence within the garden, affirming its role as the symbolic heart of the institution. Other multi-story buildings surrounding the garden rise to a uniform height of 15 meters, while single-story components of the campus – the convocation hall, forum, dining halls, and bookstore– conform to the six-meter height of the enclosing arcaded walkway. These shared building heights, interwoven with a variety of courtyards, gardens and changeable reflecting pools, together with consistency in materials and vernacular details, contribute to the calm and memorable identity of the campus. The most important principle governing the design of the campus is the primacy of open space over building. The extensive and varied landscape of the garden, with its enclosing arcade, was intended to foster the values that underlie the educational mission of the China Europe International Business School: communication, teamwork, responsibility (both social and ecological) and harmony born of mutual respect, in an ever more fruitful partnership between China and the West.
