Jay L. Berman AIA
Partner

Since joining Pei Cobb Freed & Partners in 1998, Jay Berman has contributed significantly to projects encompassing master planning, building design, and public and private development. Much of Mr. Berman's work focuses on the planning and design of complex projects, which in turn often involve complex public and institutional processes, including community and committee reviews, environmental and land-use assessments, and zoning changes. A central theme in his practice has been an interest in the intersection of design, development, and the political and business contexts in which these endeavors take place. He couples his role as designer and planner with the conviction that crucial choices and the vital synthesis of issues that shape our built environment are inextricably linked to the interplay of interested parties. This outlook informs an approach to projects that values the diverse talents of multidisciplinary teams, finds opportunities in the give-and-take between owners and stakeholders, and affirms his commitment to the firm's long-standing conception of architecture as an art of place making—an art embodying above all else a concern for the quality of public space and public life.

As a designer, Mr. Berman has played a leading role in the conception and development of academic, institutional, and commercial building projects, including the Center for Government and International Studies at Harvard University, the 2.1-million square-foot global headquarters for an international investment bank in Lower Manhattan, and the 2.1-million-square-foot WaveRock office complex in Hyderabad, India. As a planner, he has had key roles in many of the firm's most important national and international master- planning assignments, including the competition-winning mixed-use redevelopment plan for the 12-acre riverfront utility site south of the United Nations complex in Manhattan, the 40-acre Arizona State University Scottsdale Center for New Technology and Innovation, and the sustainably planned 400-acre Integrated Township at Tellapur in Hyderabad, India.

Mr. Berman received an A.B. in Architecture and History from Columbia College, Columbia University (1994), and an M. Arch from Harvard Graduate School of Design (1998), where he was awarded the Alpha Rho Chi medal for leadership, service and professional merit upon graduation. Mr. Berman served as a member of the Harvard Graduate School of Design Alumni/ae Council for six years (2000–2007) and is a member of the Urban Land Institute.
